What happens in diabetes when the body tries to process sugar?
In the case of people with diabetes, this process does not occur normally. If it is type 1 diabetes,
the body is unable to produce insulin. Another type of diabetes, type
2, is a condition that is acquired throughout life, in many cases as a
result of an inadequate diet. Type 2 diabetes
occurs when the body is unable to respond adequately to insulin
produced by the pancreas. This type of diabetes is also known as
insulin-resistant.
Having a healthy diet
is an important factor for maintaining healthy levels of blood glucose.
Unfortunately, the typical Western diet contains an enormous amount of
refined and processed foods that are simply full of “simple sugar” which
are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. This leads to an overlap of
insulin, which, over time, can lead to the body becomes resistant to
insulin, resulting in accumulation of glucose in the bloodstream. If you
do not change eating habits, the accumulation of insulin and glucose in
the bloodstream can cause hypertension, heart disease and type 2
diabetes.
Craving for sugar and chromium
There are other factors involved in the regulation of sugar (glucose)
in blood. The human body depends on a mineral called chromium to drive
blood sugar into cells. If your daily diet is low in chromium, it can lead to an accumulation of blood glucose. When glucose is unable to reach the cells, it can cause symptoms such as:
- Weakness and fatigue;
- Dizziness;
- Irritability;
- Tremors.
Eating something sweet, like a slice of chocolate cake or a sweet
satisfaction produces a momentary relief, but the effect wears off soon
after. A major problem is that this reality will inevitably affect your
weight.
Many
people with an insatiable desire for sweets -- which also have
difficulty controlling weight -- realize that a chromium supplement
helps control the same desire. After a short time interval, the craving
for sugar disappears, as a result of improved control of blood sugar.
But what seems most interesting is the fact that they realize they can
also learn how to lose weight with this.
Some foods contain chromium, although in very small quantities. It is
full of cerium in grains where we found the highest levels when
compared with fruits and vegetables. In the refining process there are
usually losses, but this mineral can also be added in order to
strengthen the final product.
